Packaging is old business because already several thousand years ago packaging was in use. But the big explosion in the use of packaging came only 50 years ago with the introduction of supermarket trade. Before retail trade was focusing on the personal service between the salesman and the customer. The product was manual handled and packaging only had the purpose of protecting and shaping the product between the shop and home.

Supermarket trade changes the whole situation. Today the packaging shall protect the product from customers trying to use or damage the product in the shop, give all the information we earlier got from the salesman and do the entire sale and marketing. Studies have shown that packaging in 40-50 weeks every year is doing the entire sales job. The few weeks annually the packaging will get help through market campaigns or merchandisers etc.
