B4: Measurement of Fragility to Climate

Different food products have for these reasons optimal storage conditions where shelf life can be extended up to 10 times. Optimal storage conditions (headspace) are a composition of:

  • Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Light (intensity and spectra)
  • O2 concentration
  • CO2 concentration
  • Ethylene concentration

Storage under such special conditions is also called CA Technology (Controlled Atmosphere).

For fruits, vegetables and flowers an optimal climate for storage can make shelf life 4-8 times longer.
